Grandpa

My mom wrote this poem that perfectly captures all these simple things that made up a legend, father, husband, and grandpa. It captures why each of the items in this collection meant something about him.

Was grown on a farm that grew him larger than life, level-headed nature just shy of clever, confident step, faithful walk, he shot straight from the western belt on his hip to the tip of his cowboy hat and whistled while he worked magic with the scissors in his sharp knuckled hands that loved on his family, making memories in the hills around a campfire and cakes on a cast iron griddle, how he played that fiddle by ear and on the rich harmonic reed at his lips, chased perfection in all the trails of his dreams, graceful, masterful on boards that skimmed the wintered hills and glassy summer lakes, his eye keen on the target of a pitched shoe ringer, a shattered clay, and eight ball banked twice, an unassuming champion leader of the town humbly lays his gavel down serving others ‘cept himself, kind and funny wit when all he could do was sit but he stood tall in our lives and in our hearts his eye keen on the target of his loved ones, the Word, and on his Lord.
